At RallyBound, our privilege is being introduced to so many worthwhile causes; Donate Life is one of them. Their tireless effort to reduce the gap in supply and demand for organ and tissue donations is inspiring and admirable.
For many of us, the thought of undergoing this type of procedure is a frightening concept. We think of inflicting pain upon ourselves, the medical repercussions or possibly don’t think about it much at all.
But the reality is too many children and adults are in vital need of organs to simply keep living, to continue having a nice meal with their loved ones, to head to the movies with friends or to get a shot at doing all of those things.
Here are some statistics for context:
-More than 24,000 patients began new lives in 2014 thanks to organ transplants (about 65 every day).
-Nearly 124,000 people in the U.S. are currently waiting for an organ transplant. More than 1,000 of them are 10 years old or younger.
-A living donor can save a life by donating a kidney or a portion of their liver, lung, pancreas or intestine.
Within April aka National Donor Month, Donate Life will be hosting a variety of events such as: Donate Life’s “Blue and Green Day Contest” to enhance the visibility of the power organ donors can have on their community, so please take a few moments to learn more about the programming they have planned.
Of course, the team here is not asking for anything other than your attention and time to understand the need behind these activities. All of us have an opportunity to help because change starts with awareness, persists with conversation and sustains with action.
